It all started with a birthday, a trip, and an idea to make the way you reveal a gift just as exciting as the gift itself.

For my husband’s 25th birthday, I wanted to surprise him with a trip. But simply telling him where we were going felt a little… boring. I wanted to create that feeling of excitement, curiosity and anticipation before the surprise was revealed.

So I made him a scratch card.

Hidden beneath the scratch off areas were different destinations we had talked about visiting, and somewhere among them was the place we were actually going.

That first scratch card was just for the two of us.

I watched as he scratched away, one area at a time, slowly revealing his birthday surprise. And in that moment, I realised something: the way you reveal a gift can become part of the gift itself.

It was such a fun and memorable way to give an experience that I shared it on social media, and the response was incredible. Friends and acquaintances loved the idea and started asking if I could make personalised scratch cards for them too.

And so, what began as a little birthday surprise between the two of us slowly grew into something more.

Over the years, we’ve created personalised scratch cards for friends and family for birthdays, Christmas, weddings and other special occasions. Again and again, we’ve seen how something as simple as scratching a card can turn giving a present into a moment everyone remembers.

That’s how Happylott was born.
